Garnets Send Nine to State Championships
The Rye girls’ swim team placed second at the Section championships November 10 at Felix Festa Middle School in West Nyack, finishing with 207 points to Ursuline’s 285.
In improving from ninth place in 2007 to second this year, Rye qualified nine athletes for the State championships, held November 21 and 22 at Erie Community College. Those shuffling off to Buffalo are Courtney Ciardello, Amanda Owens, Katie Hughes, Allison and Melissa Fulenwider, Kelly O’Neill, Lena Krikorian, JJ Cates, and diver Coco Darelius. The Garnets qualified three relay teams – 200 free, 200 IM, and 400 free – the most for Rye in over 10 years.
“They work so hard and train year round, so this was a sign of the great things they can accomplish,” said head coach Shannon Bolger.
