On the Beat
My Morning Jacket Leads the Way

It’s been one of those years in which it’s practically impossible to keep up with all the great new albums being pumped out. The most exciting part is that we still have four months left to follow up a summer of standout releases.

Ruminations
Let the Games Begin

Spurred on by the Olympics in Bejing, a few days ago I dove into a swimming pool. About an hour later I was about to do it again when my wife Anita said, “Let's see if you can better the last one". I asked her what she had given me for the last one.  She said, with very little conviction, "7 ". Apparently, my feet were too wide apart.

At the Movies “Man on Wire” Is an Amazing Balancing Act

Almost 30 years ago this week I was standing on the roof of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Voice of the Vine  Picturesque Puglia

Puglia, or Apulia in English, is the heel of the Italian boot. That is the closest that Puglia comes to being the heel of anything. What a region — stunningly beautiful, widely varied, marvelously interesting, and with some of the most delicious food, olive oil and wine in all of Italy. Grapes have grown here for over 4,000 years.

Reflections on Rye
Thruway or Our Way

While I served on the City Council and then as mayor, I tried to discourage political phone calls to my office by having my secretary ask for home numbers, with the promise that I would return the call that evening. But twice she buzzed me to say that there was a call she thought I’d want to take.

Art Beat – Summer Sampler

As summer fades into memory, there’s still time to visit a few worthwhile exhibitions before they close.
The Metropolitan Opera’s Gallery Met at Lincoln Center is presenting “The Sopranos” (the singers, not the family), a series of eight portraits of divas by Francesco Clemente, each costumed in character for an upcoming role.
