An ACTION-Filled Summer

The sound of laughter echoing through the halls of Rye Country Day School wouldn't have seemed unusual, except that it was July and students had long been on summer vacation. In their absence, a different group of young people filled the classrooms.

Rye Neck Moves Forward
The Rye Neck School District is moving full steam ahead into the 21st century by implementing a strategic plan that was introduced last year. “The initiative requires us to view, through a new lens, not only what we are presently doing, but what we want to do in the future,” explained Superintendent Peter Mustich. “Our focus continues to be on helping our students become critical thinkers and problem solvers who can deal with 21st century world issues.”

Will Your Kids Be Walking This Year?
With gas prices escalating and a “green” movement in full swing, we’re likely to see more Rye schoolchildren on foot in the weeks and months ahead. Thanks to Rye’s Safe Routes to School Committee (SRTS), the new, slimmer Boston Post Road and the crosswalk at the corner of the Old Post Road, those walking to school needn’t take their lives in their hands every morning and afternoon.

Resurrection School
What’s New
Over the summer Resurrection installed whiteboards in all of its Middle School classrooms and is now chalk-free, said Assistant Principal George Pitula. They also added five SmartBoards, one in first grade, one in second and three at the Middle School.

Young at Heart
Forty is looking younger and better all the time. Take the Rye Youth Council, a 40-year-old non-profit organization, which reaches out to more young people every year. Their tag line: cultivating caring and compassionate kids. Their mission: addressing at-risk behavior among the school population in a positive way.

The Gift of Knowledge

Twenty students, ranging from Class of 2008 high school graduates to those pursuing graduate degrees, recently received Academic Achievement Awards from the Sterling Park Residents Association at The Osborn. The recipients are children of Osborn employees. One of the criteria for consideration for the award is that the student will continue in an educational program after high school. This may be a college or university program or a trade school.

Gone to Ghana
Six incoming seniors were among a delegation from School of The Holy Child that traveled to Ghana for a two-week school exchange in June.

What We Did Over the Summer
The normal summer activity on the Rye Country Day School campus included a summer school program and Academic ACTION, an enrichment program for students from several Westchester and Bronx public schools.

Prep School Edition
Rye isn’t the only local community that’s home to outstanding private schools; there are many superb educational opportunities throughout Westchester and Fairfield. Here is a sampling of some of the best.
