Rye Swimmers Make Waves at Counties and Conferences

B20-6The 86th Annual Westchester County Swimming Association Championships, in what may be its final year at the Playland pool, got off to a late start when thunder and lightning washed out opening day August 1. Fortunately, all 48 events went off without another hitch over the next three days.

Sculti Hits the Boards Flying

B21-SPORTS-SCULTI-DSCN0798-1Talk about diving into summer! Eleven-year-old Carolina Sculti came in first on both boards at Summer Regionals in Ewing, N.J. in June. Those two wins assured her a spot at Zones in Rockville, Md., where she won Platform, 1 Meter, and 3 Meter. It was then on to the Speedo Jr. Nationals in Knoxville in early August. Competing against the top 30 divers in her age group in the country, Carolina came in first on 1 Meter, which secured her a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team. She also came in third on 3 Meter and Platform.

In the Swing for Seniors

A11-BUS AND ORGS-KirbyThe 22nd Annual George J. Kirby Memorial Golf Tournament and Dinner, held July 15, raised over $11,000 for Rye Senior cultural, educational, and social programs through the Rye Recreation Department.

Getting a Big Step Up

The Rye YMCA recently received a $20,000 “Step Up 2 Health” partnership grant from United Way of Westchester and Putnam to fund the Y’s Healthier Communities Initiatives.

Working Hard to Keep Rye Sustainable

Rye’s Sustainability Committee was a welcome presence during the sidewalk sale in late July. The Committee welcomed passersby from their table outside the Square House, which featured the group’s new brochure, as well as a survey and a carbon printing exercise.

Sailing for a Cure

regatta1The Larchmont Yacht Club will host its first Leukemia Cup Regatta, September 10 and 11, to raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s mission to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.

Revenue Shortfall Likely for City

The City’s of Rye first-half financial results for 2011 were released last month and while revenues were 2% higher for the same period in 2010, expenditures were up 9%. For the six months ending June 30, General Fund revenues were $23.9 million, against expenditures of $14.7 million. The $9.2 million difference was $736,000 less than in the first half of 2010.

County Legislators Override Astorino’s WCM Lease Veto

A5-wcm1August has been quite the rollercoaster ride for the Westchester Children’s Museum, which was seeking approval of a 10-year lease to operate in the north bathhouse at Playland. In a special meeting August 24, the Board of Legislators voted 15-0 (two were absent) to override County Executive Rob Astorino’s August 19 veto of the Board’s unanimous decision.

Firefighters and Shelter Animals Featured in Tail-Wagging Calendar

The New Rochelle Humane Society is releasing a cute and cuddly version, however, featuring firefighters from the 17 local communities the shelter serves paired with homeless pets available for adoption.

Build a Political Debate Site And Young People Will Come

ALTCHEK-Policymic-Logo-colorWhile many college grads are out interviewing and looking for jobs, Chris Altchek took the entrepreneurial plunge. The Rye native, along with a friend, launched his own business, a novel website and news feed called Policymic.com. The interactive forum was designed to give young people a place to join the national conversation on major topics of the day.
