With their 3-2 win over John Jay on October 17, the girls’ field hockey team improved to 9-1-1, their only loss (3-1) coming at the hands of non-league Darien, owners of an 88-game winning streak. The Lady Garnets are on track to take Section 1 by storm.
Rye Neck accomplished two feats October 14: they avenged a 2-2 tie earlier in the season by defeating Pleasantville 2-0 on Homecoming Weekend, and qualified for the playoffs with a 7-1-4 record with four games to play. They’re now the most successful Rye Neck field hockey squad in over a decade.
The way some people see it, the Clash of the Titans didn’t take place in Harrison this weekend, but in Rye. While “The Game” received most of the attention, as usual, unbeaten Rye Country Day hosted also-unbeaten St. Luke’s, Fairchester co-champs with the Wildcats in 2010.
After losing for the second time this season to the undefeated and top-ranked Class A team in the State, the Port Chester Rams, the Garnets beat two neighboring rivals last week in back-to-back games, by identical 2-1 scores.
The Rye Scarlet Knights are one of the many Rye soccer teams that have gone pink for this month in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The U-11 boys team competed in a Columbus Weekend Tournament against some tough opponents from Greenwich, Yonkers, and Eastchester.
Proving that only real men can wear pink, they beat out the competition, as well as some incredulous looks, to win the day.
Par for the annual Christopher D. Mello Memorial Golf Outing course, sportsmanship, camaraderie, and generosity led the day at Apawamis Club October 3. One hundred twenty golfers came out in remembrance of Chris, and to help provide financial assistance so that the Rye Y can expand its outreach program.
It’s not often in high school tennis that an individual match, a team victory, and a League title all depend on a single strike of the ball. But that’s just how things stood at twilight October 17, when Molly Jordan got ready to serve in the super-tiebreaker of her No. 3 singles match at Byram Hills.
The Lady Garnets made a statement October 15 at home against St. Luke’s, defeating the previously unbeaten team 1-0 to keep their winning momentum going. Rye was also on top against Harrison the night before, but the game was called due to a thunderstorm.
Kelly McRedmond, a three-year starting defender for the Rye High School girls’ soccer team, was recently selected as Lions Club Athlete of the Month, the first of the new school year.
Out-of-this-world Italian flavor touched down in Rye October 7, when Planet Pizza opened at 1004 Boston Post Road.
