Autumn is the most beautiful season in the garden. Brilliance abounds on a grand scale. Towering trees are ablaze in red, rose, orange, and gold.Ornamental grass seed heads sparkle in sunshine, while their weathered blades play music in the wind. Late-blooming perennials offer fleeting spots of beauty. Leaves, like colorful confetti, fall, curl, and flutter before covering the garden floor in shimmering radiance. Things are usually fairly quiet when I jog along the streets around the Milton neighborhood in the early hours, but every now and then something exciting happens.
Milton School second graders did a segment on sea creatures earlier this month. Students in Mrs. Ridley and Mrs. Taddeo’s classes walked to Oakland Beach, and, with the help of Rye Nature Center staff, collected and learned about silver backs (minnows), green and hermit crabs, snails, pipefish, sea stars, and even puffer fish.
