Veterans Day took on another special significance this month — The Osborn held a Remembrance Ball that night. Veteran residents, supporters of the senior facility, and community members far and wide came out to raise funds for a dedicated Memory Care Center at The Osborn.
It took them a little longer than they would have liked, but the Rye Country Day field hockey team captured their third NYSAIS State championship November 6 at Manhattanville, with a 2-1 overtime win over top-seeded Nichols.
With a roster buoyed by eight senior veterans, the Rye Country Day boys’ soccer team was primed for postseason success in 2011. The team achieved just that, appearing in both the NYSAIS State title game and FAA tournament championship. Although they lost both tilts, the Wildcats finished an impressive 14-4 with a 3-2 postseason mark. They posted 10 shutouts and won 11 in a row at one point.
Unfortunately for the Rye field hockey team, the third time was not the charm. The top-seeded Garnets fell 4-0 to No. 2 Lakeland in the Class B Section championship November 6 at Arlington High School. It was the third consecutive time Rye reached the finals, only to be turned back by the rival Hornets.
Annie Van Wagenen, a member of Rye’s Section finalist field hockey team, was recently named October’s Lions Club Athlete of the Month.
There’s no doubt the Rye Neck field hockey team wanted to add a Section title as the exclamation point to a standout season, but despite falling just short – they lost 5-0 to No. 1 Bronxville in the finals – the Panthers are riding high.
In a game the Rye Country Day football team needed to win in order to clinch a second straight FAA championship and their first-ever undefeated regular season, the Wildcats put up their lowest point total of the season. Fortunately for RCDS, that number is 35.
The women’s team from Rye Brook, representing the USTA Eastern Section, captured the national title at the USTA League 3.5 Senior National Championships held last month in Indian Wells, California.
Julia Bateman, a fifth grader at Milton School, came in third place among all 10- to 11-year-old girls across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut in the NFL’s recent Punt, Pass & Kick competition. The final event was held at Metlife Stadium before the Giants played the Dolphins October 30. Sean Landeta, the Giants’ Super Bowl-winning punter, presented the awards.
The Rye Middle School Modified Black Volleyball team didn’t have the winningest of seasons, but they had fun and learned a lot. At their end-of-season celebration, coach Katrina Smith thanked the girls for their teamwork and dedication, and recognized Co-Captains Lilly McGinty and Jean Romano for their strong leadership.
