Windows into a Winter Wonderland

windowNew York City glistens more than usual around the holidays. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade set the festivities in motion. Rockefeller Center just celebrated its 79th annual tree lighting. Cartier’s has been wrapped in a gigantic, red sparkling bow for weeks. Rye has a dazzling downtown of its own. On a stroll down Purchase Street, one can spy flickering lights, ornate wreaths, pinecones, nutcrackers, snowflakes, and velvety Santas.

Oh Christmas Tree, Our Christmas Tree

treethumbThe Jones Family Farm is an idyllic 400-acre spot, with literally thousands of Christmas trees to choose from, in the White Hills of Shelton, Connecticut. Established in 1850 as a dairy farm, it wasn’t until after World War II that the Jones family invited friends to chop down their own trees.

Tuesdays at Blythedale

blythethumbOn his weekly visits to Blythedale Children’s Hospital, TJ Steinthal couldn’t help but notice how many children his age and younger had much bigger issues to deal with than he did.

The Giving Season

givingthumbGiving, not receiving, is the true meaning of the holiday spirit. In today’s material world, it’s comforting to know there are many proactive people and organizations in Rye dedicated to helping the needy. Here are a few from the long list of Santa’s helpers and busy elves this season.

Hope For the Holidays

hopethumbWhile most children are making a list and checking it twice, many are just thankful for everyday necessities such as food and clothing. But The Children’s Hope Chest (CHC), a grassroots organization that began in Purchase, recognizes all children need to have their wishes granted, and will help make holiday dreams come true for a seventh consecutive year.

Make the Holidays Special for a Soldier

mythumbRye High School’s My Soldier, along with Bronxville’s Hearts to Home and Harvard College Helping Heroes, are conducting a “Welcome Home Heroes” letter drive to express the appreciation of a grateful country for the many sacrifices made by soldiers.

Don’t Let the Holidays Hijack Good Intentions

sandWe didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Scotland, but we have for nearly a decade in Rye, and it’s become one of our family’s favorite holidays. The difficulty is that it’s only one of a number of holidays enjoyed here with large quantities of rich and high-calorie food. The holiday season is a challenge for people watching their weight – it’s not uncommon to gain five to ten pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year!

Fetchable Gifts

fetchthumbUnlike other family members, dogs can’t make their holiday lists or even drop hints throughout the year. So how do you know what to get that special him or her?

Nuttier Than a Fruitcake

fruitthumbWhat happened to the ubiquitous Christmas fruitcake of yesteryear? It was once such a popular gift item that Johnny Carson liked to quip: “There is one fruitcake in the world, and people keep sending it to each other.”
