Patriotism was on display at Milton School January 25. Fifth graders created art, researched famous American landmarks and people, and sang patriotic songs for the Art Across America presentation. The program was created by second-year art teacher Kristin Castaldi. To top things off, Milton PTO members provided a “native” luncheon for the students that included patriotic fare like apple pie and ice cream.
Contrary to reports of private school students facing a much tougher early-admissions game this year, nearly 90% of School of the Holy Child seniors who applied early decision/early action were admitted to their first-choice school. Among them are: Brown, Bucknell, Cornell, Elon, Fordham, Georgetown, Lehigh, MIT, NYU, Northeastern, Notre Dame, Oberlin, Rhode Island School of Design, St. Andrews, Vanderbilt, and Villanova.

Rye High School seniors Molly Jordan and Alexander Mun have been selected as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. The program recognizes some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors, who are selected based on their accomplishments in areas such as academics, the arts, leadership, and involvement in school and the community. They must also represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth.
Students at Daniel Warren were recently given a mission they were all too keen to accept. Propelled by a highlight reel play late in the game, the Rye boys’ basketball team defeated rival Harrison 55-53 at home February 1 in front of a jam-packed gym.
The Rye Y Wave Ryeders continued their winning season with victories over Harrison January 15 and the Mid-Westchester Jewish Community Center a week later.
Although undermanned, the Garnets finished the regular season on a high note at home February 2 against Hastings, winning every match but one. The camaraderie the team enjoyed despite a less-than-ideal season-long situation that equated to many forfeits was all the more evident, with senior captains Joe Simolacaj, Ben Breitel, and Jeff Dempsey leading the way.
After defeating Fox Lane 51-43 February 3, each of the Lady Garnets hugged their head coach, Mary Henwood, exuberantly. There was good reason for the show of enthusiasm.
The Rye boys’ swimming and diving team ended their regular season competition in a meet against Mamaroneck January 31. Although it was close – each Garnet swam to a personal best, showing great improvement from earlier meets – Mamaroneck had more depth and secured the victory. Rye finished the season with a 3-5 record.
