As the County continues to assess the damage done to Playland, officials have decided that the ice casino will not open for the 2012-2013 season due to structural damage from Hurricane Sandy.

In September, Karen Kobayashi won a bronze medal at the ANC Continental Cup in Cardrona, New Zealand. She competed against Olympians and World Cup riders in that snowboardcross race, the sport’s top event in the Southern Hemisphere. This earned her the No. 5 ranking for U.S. women in the sport — and a spot for the World Cup.

Although school was officially closed for Thanksgiving break last weekend, the Rye Country Day School Athletic Center and football field resounded with the sounds of alumni and friends who had gathered for a longstanding schools tradition: post-turkey-day ice hockey and basketball games, as well as the first annual touch football game.

Rye Country Day School students, faculty, and staff performed the musical “Working”, based on the 1974 book by Studs Terkel, to packed houses at the school’s Dunn Performing Arts Center earlier this month. The show featured a cast of 31 onstage and another 30 behind the scenes to tell the stories of what Terkel described as “the extraordinary dreams of ordinary people.”

There was no pumpkin pie, no turkey, and no maize at the November 9 Multicultural Feast for second graders at Milton School, but no one minded. The lunch is a 14-year-old tradition at Milton and, this year, 62 second graders gobbled up ethnic favorites like Vegemite sandwiches, Irish sausage rolls, and rice balls.

Challenge Camp is excited to announce its new location at School of the Holy Child’s picturesque 18-acre campus. Accredited by the American Camping Association, the 2013 program provides a selection of more than 45 educational morning workshops and sports instruction for gifted and talented children from pre-kindergarten through junior high school. Summer sessions will be held June 24-July 19 and July 22-August 9.

The Rye High varsity basketball team has many question marks this season, and something new — Head Coach John Aguilar taking over leadership of the boys’ squad. The Garnets followed a rocky first scrimmage against the Eastchester Eagles last Wednesday with a beautiful 65-50 performance on the road at Pelham. (No score was kept in the Eagles’ practice game.)

 

 

 

sports-rhs girls cross country teamDespite some setbacks due to injuries, both the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams finished the season strong, with a solid showing in the League and Sectional meets. Sadly, along with this being the last Cross Country season for the senior athletes, it is also the last season of coaching for Boys’ Varsity Coach Craig Sandhaus, after 31 years at the helm.
