60+ Year Rye Resident and Retired Teacher Dies at 94

Bob Sweeney lived in Rye for 66 years, taught history in Port Chester for three decades.

Robert Joseph Sweeney passed away peacefully in Rye at the age of 94 on Sept. 11, 2025, with his family by his side.

Born April 8, 1931, to Joseph Woods Sweeney and Helen Devlin Sweeney in New York, N.Y., Bob grew up in Larchmont, N.Y., attended Iona Grammar School, and graduated from the New Hampton School in N.H. He ran track at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and received a B.S. in political science.

After returning to the New York area, Bob received a M.S. in education from Fordham University and then taught for 30 years in Port Chester, N.Y., where he could leverage his love of history.

He met Margaret “Peggy” Toohy of Rye, and they were married in 1958. They enjoyed 66 wonderful years living in Rye together.

Bob is survived by his wife, Peggy, and his four children: John (Linda) of Concord, Mass.; Katharine of Rye; Margaret of Rye; and Eileen of Houston, Texas; along with three grandchildren: John C., Theodore R., and Anna R. Sweeney.

Bob was predeceased by his elder brother, Joseph, Jr., and his parents.

A wake will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Graham Funeral Home in Rye. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye. Burial will be private.
