Margaret Toohy “Peggy” Sweeney passed away peacefully in Rye at the age of 91 on Sept. 18, 2025, with her family by her side, just one week after her husband, Robert J. Sweeney.
Born in Larchmont in 1934 to John J. Toohy and Loretta Hughes Toohy, Peggy and her four siblings moved to Rye in 1935.
Peggy graduated from Resurrection School, Rye High School, then from the College of New Rochelle in 1955. She later earned a Master of Science in elementary education from Fordham University in 1959.
Peggy taught second grade at Midland (Annex) School in Rye. After getting married and starting her family, she taught pre-K for 10 years at Rye Country Day School.
Peggy was a dedicated community volunteer who supported Cub and Girl Scouts and Midland and Rye High School. She was also a CCD teacher, lector, and Eucharistic Minister at the Church of the Resurrection.
Peggy married Robert J. Sweeney of Larchmont in 1958. They enjoyed 66 wonderful years living in Rye together. Bob and Peggy were blessed with four children: John (Linda) of Concord, Mass.; Katharine of Rye; Margaret of Rye; and Eileen of Houston, Texas; along with three grandchildren: John C., Theodore R., and Anna R. Sweeney.
Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Bob, one week before her passing. She was also predeceased by her parents; her elder brothers, J. Thomas and Rev. Monsignor William J. Toohy; her sister, Mary T. Hyson; and her twin brother, R. Peter Toohy.
A joint wake for Bob and Peggy will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Graham Funeral Home in Rye, and a joint funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye. Burials will be private.
