Playland Ice Casino was filled with current and former Rye High School hockey players and supporters December 3 in celebration of the team’s 40th anniversary. But among the cheering fans were teary-eyed ones. Before the game against Iona Prep, a ceremony was held announcing the Collins Cup, which will be awarded at the end of the season each year to the player who best exhibits Peter Collins’ team spirit, joyful energy, and sheer love of the Garnets and hockey.
Sadly, the Garnets lost to Iona Prep 4-2 that night, following their 3-2 loss to Mt. Pleasant November 29.
Coach Peter Thomas acknowledged this is a rebuilding year for the Garnets but he hopes to improve on last season’s 12-8-2 record and win the section, a feat the team last achieved in 2010.
