Thanksgiving came early this year for Carver families. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of The Children’s Hope Chest, 300 brand new coats were collected and gifted to Carver children. The beautifully wrapped coats, along with hats and gloves, were distributed during a Thanksgiving themed dinner November 23 at Carver Center. Chef Gustavo Diaz prepared the monster-sized feast, with help from volunteers.
The Children’s Hope Chest had almost 200 volunteers on hand to serve dinner and hand out the coats. This year, they collected a total of 900 — all donated in brand-new condition. Families from neighboring communities participated. One volunteer, a student at Rye Country Day, said her school hosted a special drive to collect coats. Some clothing came from as far as Texas and Florida. Other organizations that benefit from The Children’s Hope Chest generosity include The Andrus Children’s Center in Yonkers and the Bronx YMCA.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, The Children’s Hope Chest provides help and offers hope to children in the community suffering from poverty, abuse, neglect, and illness. They strive to increase social action by promoting adult and youth volunteerism.
