President John Adams paid a visit to the Rye Historical Society Annual Spring Luncheon and Boutique at American Yacht Club March 6. He spoke with humor and affection of his wife, Abigail Adams. The renowned Adams re-enactor George Baker recounted how Abigail Adams defied the sexist conventions of her time and utilized her keen financial skills to help the family prosper. Much of the historical material for the program was derived from the correspondence between the second U.S. president and his wife. Their scores of letters brought their loving relationship to life and provided insight into why Abigail Adams should be considered the first modern American woman.
