For sixteen teachers in the Rye City School District, the June 11 Board of Education meeting was a big night. Superintendent Dr. Frank Alvarez recognized the newly tenured teachers.
Congratulations to: James Bannon, Jessica Comitino, Julianne Corbalis, Salvatore Curella, John Griffin, Aaron Marsh, Francesca Miller, Alejandrina Ramos, Dayna Reist, Jessica Jewett Rowe, Roni Sarig, Erin Sornberger, Caterine Trainor, Erin Trapasso, Dawn Veilleux, and Aleksey Vodyanitsky.
“Getting tenure means a lot. It feels great to be recognized for hard work and dedication to this school. Tenure is a commitment from the District that it believes in what I am doing and wants me to continue doing it,” said Ms. Corbalis, seventh-grade social studies teacher.
In order to be considered for tenure, a teacher must have been in place for a two- or three-year probationary period. To attain tenure, principals prepare binders with evidence of teachers’ performance in areas including professional, instructional, communication, and knowledge development. Principals then appear before the Board of Ed to speak on behalf of tenure candidates and show evidence of exemplary performance. Not every teacher recommended receives tenure.
