Mother Nature cooperated with the Rye YMCA and provided perfect running weather for the 26th running of the Rye Derby. Both elite and amateur runners participated in the 5-Mile and 5K races, and families and kids raced one another in the 1-Mile Fun Run. The Y parking lot was packed with fun for Healthy Kids Day. It was a big hit, from the inflatable batting cage and the climbing wall to the delicious free BBQ and frozen yogurt.
The winner of the 5-Mile race was Mourad Marofit, age 31, with a time of 23:40; the female winner for the second year in a row was Askale Merachi, age 27, who finished in 28:48.
The top Rye 5M runners were Malcolm Gray (30:59) and Jennifer Hoogstra (37:32).

The winner of the 5K race was 10-year-old Jonah Gorevic (18:33). The female 5K winner was Rye resident Natalie Weiner (20:11).
In recognition of the Y’s centennial year, the first 100 runners to finish received a commemorative Frisbee. Derby Day was just the beginning of great things to come.
