On Friday night, Rye High School’s Parson Street Players will open their season with the Moss/Kaufman comedy “You Can’t Take It With You,” featuring 28 members of the theater group.
The production marks the directorial debut of Leanne Janos, a Special Education teacher at Rye Middle School. The Players are now overseen by Thomas Snowden, who teaches music at RMS.
Although it debuted in the 1930s, the story of star-crossed lovers with mismatched families is still a good one. On one side is the zany Vanderhof/Carmichael family, led by Martin Vanderhof who lives by the credo: Don’t do anything you don’t enjoy. He’s also a tax evader. On the other side is the prominent, well-to-do Kirby family who stick to the straight and narrow. The conflict between the two families ends in fireworks, an IRS invasion, and a graphic design scandal. It’s not your ordinary Romeo and Juliet tale.
The cast includes John Arenas, Kate Clark, Ben DeMarco, Ross DeMarco, Judson Ellis, Alex Hufford, Lily McGinty, Luke McGinty, and Haley Orr.
Performances are October 11 at 7:30 p.m., and October 12 at 1:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m., at the Rye High Performing Arts Center.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and no charge for seniors.
