Our group of docents from another museum recently enjoyed a wonderful tour by a docent of The Glass House museum, the mid-20th century modern residence built by architect Philip Johnson in New Canaan, Conn.
Johnson’s works include the David H. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center, the bronze-and-glass Seagram’s Building, and the red Granite Lipstick Building, all in New York City.
He built the house in 1949 and lived there until he died in 2005. It is a must-see for art and architecture lovers. Visitors enjoy experiencing the 49-acre pastoral landscape, including 14 structures designed by Johnson and outdoor sculptures.
The site also houses a permanent collection of 20th century art that includes works by Frank, Stella, Donald Judd, Andy Warhol, Eli Nadelman, John Chamberlain, and Nicolas Poussin, as well as a collection of Bauhaus-era furniture by Mies van der Rohe.
Guided tours run from April through December, Thursdays and Mondays, from the visitor center in central New Canaan. Ticket and tour information may be obtained at TheGlassHouse.org.
