History Highlights

Native Americans in Rye

The Rye Historical Society invites the community to explore Rye’s Native American History on Nov. 16, 3:30-5 p.m. at the Rye Free Reading Room. Joie Cooney will present artifacts from the Rye Historical Society collection as well as perspectives from local historians, Lenape descendants, and eminent scholars. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view artifacts from the Morgan Seacord Collection.

My Climate Change with Andrew Revkin

Andrew Revkin, one of America’s most experienced and innovative environmental journalists, will be at the Jay Heritage Center on Nov. 17, 3 p.m., to talk about how people can get beyond amorphous labels like sustainability and climate emergency by asking questions, starting with “Sustain what?” He has written on global environmental change and risk for more than 40 years, reporting from the North Pole to the White House, the Amazon rainforest to the Vatican, serving as a staff reporter for The New York Times from 1995-2009.

Duck Migration and Shelter Building

On Nov. 16, Edith Read Wildlife Sanctuary will offer two programs: From 10-11:30 a.m., there will be a Winter Duck Migration Observation to study the behavior of waterfowl. Attendees meet at the Visitor Center and should bring binoculars. From 1-2:30 p.m., the Remember Fall Shelter Building program is back by popular demand. Nature lovers of all ages will work together to build a structure in under two hours. Participants should dress for the woods.

Celebrate the Arts

The Gratitude Project: Paintings & Poetry of the U.S. Poets Laureate

On Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 2-3:30 p.m., the Osborn will host a reception, gallery tour, and talk with resident and artist Hilda Green Demsky in the Sterling Lounge and Auditorium. During the tour, visitors will view Demsky’s original paintings displayed alongside the poetry that inspired them. In this series, “The Gratitude Project,” Demsky masterfully interprets the poetic reflections of more than 30 U.S. State Poets Laureate, who, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, shared their thoughts on community and gratitude. Polymer Clay Turkeys

Using polymer clay, participants will learn how to make simple shapes and put them together to form a Thanksgiving-themed sculpture. All projects will be baked at home with instructions included with each project. The Rye Arts Center will hold this workshop in two sessions on Nov. 16, 10-11 a.m. for 5- to 8-year-olds and 11 a.m.-12 p.m. for 9 to 12-year-olds.

T.S. Elliot with Mark Schenker

On Nov. 17 at 12:30 p.m., the next Sundays with Mark Schenker at the Rye Free Reading Room features a discussion of two T.S. Elliot poems, “The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock” and “The Hollow Men.” Attendees will become more comfortable reading the works of this great poet and continue to explore Modernism through an analysis of his poetry. This is part of an annual series with former Dean and Professor of Literature at Yale, Mark Schenker.

Collage with Meera (BYOB)

This month’s Rye Arts Center Adult Night Out is a mixed media and collage workshop on Nov. 21, 6:30-8 p.m. Participants will use paint, found objects, and eclectic materials like magazine cutouts and fabric to create collages. They will also explore color, composition, and perspective, and are encouraged to bring photos to personalize the collage. No experience necessary. Led by Meera Agarwal.

Community Events

College: What Your Teen Wants You to Hear

On Nov. 20, 7-8 p.m. at the Rye High School Performing Arts Center, Heard in Rye will host its first annual Junior Board event, organized by high school student representatives from participating schools. The evening features a presentation by Kent Rinehart, Dean of Undergraduate Admission at Marist College, and a panel discussion on the college application process with a focus on helping students find the best fit for their personal interests and goals. This is intended for parents and high school students.

Rye Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

Reverend Ryan Muldoon, S.T.L., director of Ecumenical and Interreligious Dialogue for the Archdiocese of New York, will be the speaker at this annual interfaith service on Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. at Church of the Resurrection. Sponsored by the Rye Women’s Interfaith Committee, a reception will follow the service.
