Outdoor Education

Volunteer Work Project: Woodchips on Hiking Trails

The goal of this project is to continue the beautification of certain foot paths. This is great for student community service hours. Volunteers should bring work gloves. Hand tools will be provided. This will be held at the Edith Read Wildlife Sanctuary on Sept. 6, 1-2:30 p.m. Please register by Aug. 31 at friendsofreadwildlifesanctuary.org.

Celebrate the Arts

Read in Rye: Eileen O’Connor

Through her well-crafted essays, local writer Eileen O’Connor shares stories of her family, the challenges and joys of raising a child on the autism spectrum, and the transformation that comes through new perspectives. O’Connor, who is a contributing writer for The Rye Record, will be joined in conversation with Annabel Monaghan for a celebration of love, loss, and doing life differently. This event is held at the Rye Free Reading Room on Sept. 4, 7-8:30 p.m. Books for sale and signing.

Strings on the Sound

The Wainwright House is hosting Strings on the Sound: An Evening of Classical Music, on Sept. 7, 5:30-7 p.m. This is an elegant evening of classical music under the tent, featuring the Sound Shore Quartet and sweeping views of the Long Island Sound. The event includes light bites and complimentary wine, generously provided by Vaccaro’s Wine & Spirits.

Cost: $45/members; $55/nonmembers; $40/seniors

Farmers’ Market

The Rye Farmers’ Market is open every Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market, located in the parking lot off Theodore Fremd behind the Purchase Street stores, features local produce, meats, and other environmentally-conscious products.

Annual Book Sale

The Rye Free Reading Room will host its annual book sale on the Village Green on Sept. 13 and 14, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The book sale features gently-used books for all ages across a wide range of genres. Book donations will be accepted beginning Sept. 3.

Cost: Most books are $2-$3
