Around Town: Walking Tours, Summer Concerts, and a Teddy Bear Picnic

Time Travelers Camp

During the week of Aug. 12-16, the Rye Historical Society is hosting a week-long camp for 7-11 year olds at the Square House Museum. Campers will journey back in time and step into the shoes of the people of Rye during the Colonial and Revolutionary periods and the early 1800s to learn about daily life, including communication, crafts, games, food, and work.

Milton Point Walking Tour

Milton Harbor, one of the most beautiful areas in Rye, has drawn people for thousands of years, since its early days as summer hunting and fishing grounds for the Lenape Native Americans. On this tour of Rye’s prime coastal area on Saturday, July 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., participants will learn about the history of Native American communities, as well as the story of early European settlement. In addition to visiting waterfront landmarks, the tour discusses how waterways significantly affected Rye’s growth and the New Haven railroad transformed the area from a sleepy maritime village to a sought-after summer retreat.

Listen at the Library

Listen at the Library is an outdoor summer audiobook series for adults that will meet on Tuesday afternoons, 1:30-4:30 p.m., on the Village Green. The next audiobook will be “Sea of Tranquility” (July 23, 30). Light refreshments and snacks will be provided. In the event of inclement weather, sessions will move indoors to the Teen Room.

Read in Rye, Tom Casey

Author Tom Casey will speak at the library about his third novel, Unsettled States. Casey grew up in Rye, and now lives in Connecticut. His unconventional exploration of voyeurism, infidelity, murder, and spiritual corruption is shot through with flashes of social commentary and humor. When a small Connecticut coastal town is shaken by a set of seemingly random tragedies, a gripping investigation of facts and fabrications ensues. This discussion takes place at the Rye Free Reading Room on July 25 at 6:30 p.m. Casey will have signed copies of his book available for those interested in purchasing.

Summer Sessions

Barley Beach House hosts 107.1 The Peak Summer Sessions on the Beach. Indie music group Fantastic Cat and the pop rock band The Vindys play on July 22 at 7 p.m. Cassandra Lewis brings her signature blend of country and rock to the beach on July 27 at 7 p.m.

Rye Town Park Concert Series

On Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m., Rye Town Park hosts its annual summer concert series. Guests bring their lawn chairs, picnic dinners, blankets, and dancing shoes as a range of local bands take the stage. The upcoming shows are Urban Coyotes (July 23), Back to the Garden 1969 (July 30) and Billy and the Showmen (Aug. 6).

Summer Sounds & Rock and Roll Playhouse Concert Series

Until Sept. 1, 2024, Playland is collaborating with the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester to present live music and entertainment every other weekend at Playland’s main stage. The Saturday evening shows begin at 7 p.m. and feature a variety of cover bands. The Sunday afternoon shows start at 2 p.m. These family-friendly performances are part of the Rock and Roll Playhouse series.

Cost: Concerts are included with admission to Playland Amusement Park

YMCA Fall Program Registration

Registration for fall programs begins on Aug. 7 for family and adult members, Aug. 8 for youth members, and Aug. 14 for non-members. Programs begin on Sept. 7.

Meditation & Mindful Gardening Service Project

Certified meditation teacher and environmentalist Lexy Tomaino and high school student Max Bajuk will lead participants in a project to improve the pollinator garden and labyrinth at Wainwright House. This week-long project is offered July 22-26. The money raised will cover gardening supplies.

Rye Farmers Market

On Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. vendors fill the parking lot off Theodore Fremd, behind the Purchase Street stores. The market features regional small-scale farmers, creative food items and much more. The Rye Farmers Market is run by Down to Earth Markets.

Teddy Bear Picnic

The Wainwright House and Rye Free Reading Room are offering a fun celebration for kids and families, featuring live music and stories. On Saturday, Aug. 3, from 4-6 p.m., children can bring a stuffed animal, blanket, and snack to the Wainwright House for this wonderful event.
