Rye High School students left their early morning classes May 24 to attend the Spring Awards Assembly, a showcase of student talent and achievement. A number of students received departmental awards, signifying excellence in a certain area; a few outstanding students were recognized for their achievement in sports.

Although awards are an exciting part of the event, what most students loved about the awards assembly were two videos — one by seniors, the other a music video by the teachers.

The student video featured a collection of interviews in which seniors shared stories and apologized for past injuries. Every year, it allows the upcoming graduates the opportunity to reminisce about their elementary and middle school experiences, while looking forward to life after high school.

In the faculty’s video sendoff to seniors, lots of them moved and lip-synced to “Call Me Maybe”. The video was a big hit. Jack Agosta, a junior, summed it up best: “I nearly fell off my chair laughing.”

At the assembly, students also got the chance to see friends and classmates show off their talents. Among the highlights were a harmonica solo, a percussion band, and an Irish dance routine. “The range of talent at this assembly was really impressive,” said junior Fiona McFarland.

It’s not just the audience that enjoys the performances. As senior Maura Zipf, who danced in the assembly, said, “It’s a great way for students and teachers to appreciate one another’s talents and accomplishments. The ability to be part of the awards assembly was both a great honor and a lot of fun.”
