The Ceres Garden Club of Rye is pleased to announce that they have received the approval of the City Council to begin a fundraising campaign for a Blue Star Memorial By-Way plaque to be installed within the City of Rye.
The Blue Star Memorial honors service women and men who have served, are serving, or will be serving in the armed services of the United States.
In 1945 the National Council of Garden Clubs (now the National Garden Clubs, Inc.) adopted the program, which was started in New Jersey, and began a Blue Star Highway system, which covers thousands of miles across the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. There are By-Way markers in Westchester County located in New Rochelle, Lasdon Park and Arboretum in Katonah, Brewster, Carmel, Lake Mahopac, Briarcliff Manor, and Ardsley.
Tax-deductible donations will be used for the purchase of the plaque, mounting and installation, plantings, and ongoing care of the site. Contributions should be mailed to The Ceres Garden Club of Rye, c/o Elizabeth Northshield, 5 Hawthorne Place, Rye, NY 10580.
