The small airplane that crashed onto I-684 near the Westchester-Connecticut border around 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 killed a man from Monsey in Rockland County.
Multiple media outlets reported that the passenger of the small plane, 32-year-old Jacob Yankele Friedman from Monsey, was flying alongside 26-year-old pilot Kalmen Goldberger in a single-engine Tecnam P-2008 from Linden, N.J., to Westchester County Airport the evening of the accident.
Kalmen was said to have noticed engine problems and tried to land at Westchester County Airport, but the engine stalled and the aircraft went down on I-684 just after 6:30 p.m.
Westchester County and New York State Police spokespeople told The Record the crash happened in a part of land between New York and Connecticut, and the two state police agencies have been working together to respond to the incident.
The collision took place near Exit 2 on the interstate, according to the New York State Police.
Friedman was pronounced dead at the scene, Connecticut State Police said.
Cops closed off I-684 at Exit 2 on the northbound side and at Exit 3 on the southbound side for roughly seven hours after the incident, and drivers were asked to avoid the area.
