A threat made to the Rye YMCA Wednesday afternoon led police to evacuate both of the not-for-profit’s downtown buildings.
Rye Police were notified of a menacing phone call, which came from an anonymous source, at roughly 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 7 before responding and clearing both YMCA locations — the main building, located at 21 Locust Ave., and the Y Studios at 1031 Boston Post Road.
Police Lt. Michael Anfuso said the department did a threat assessment, quickly identified the suspect, and believed the threat was not credible.
The suspect made the phone call from within a city residence, according to Anfuso, who would not disclose the suspect’s identity while an investigation remains ongoing.
The YMCA issued a notice on their website Wednesday evening informing members of the incident.
“This afternoon, we received an anonymous phone call threatening our YMCA,” the notice states. “We immediately notified the authorities and began following our safety procedures at the Rye YMCA and the Y Studios. All locations then closed.”
Both facilities resumed normal operations Thursday morning.
“At the Rye YMCA, the safety and well-being of our members, children in our care, staff, and volunteers always has been and always will be a top priority,” the notice adds. “We are fully cooperating with the Rye Police Department in their investigation.”
The YMCA said in a statement Thursday it will use the incident as an opportunity to review its safety protocols.
Police do not plan to issue any further comment until the investigation is wrapped up, Anfuso said.
A message left for Sabrina Murphy, CEO of the Rye YMCA, was not returned as of press time.
