A 5-year-old boy who was rushed to the hospital Thursday after having what was reported as a medical episode while in the Playland Pool, died Monday night.
The Bronx child, who was at Playland with his family, appeared to have suffered a seizure in the amusement park’s pool area during the afternoon on Aug. 1 and was taken to Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut, according to Westchester County police.
CPR was administered on the boy before he was transported to the hospital, a Playland spokesperson said.
He was later transferred to Westchester Medical Center but died Monday from asphyxiation due to drowning, according to media reports. The name of the family has not been released.
Westchester County deferred all questions Tuesday to Playland’s operator, Standard Amusements.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of the child from last Thursday’s incident, and our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking event. We have no further details at this time,” a Playland spokesperson told The Record.
The pool is run by Standard Amusements, an investment firm that took over management of the amusement park, pool and Tiki Bar restaurant in 2021 from the county — which owns the Rye-based property.
After closing in 2019, the pool reopened last summer following an extensive $10 million renovation.
“How tragic, and my heart goes out to that poor family,” said county lawmaker Catherine Parker, whose district includes Playland. “It’s terrible. I can’t imagine losing a 5-year-old.”
Parker said she was disappointed that Standard hasn’t been in communication with the county Board of Legislators since the incident.
The pool remains closed as county police continue their investigation. The amusement park was closed on Wednesday due to poor weather.
Calls to the county police seeking comment were unsuccessful.
