A Bronx man was arrested in Rye after allegedly attempting to steal a resident’s car keys and later resisting police during a traffic stop, authorities said.
Carlos Varela-Pichardo, 33, was booked on Feb. 1, after allegedly following a Rye resident home and demanding his car keys.
According to the investigation, Varela-Pichardo fled the scene when the man refused to hand over his keys. Police arrested Varela-Pichardo a short distance away from the resident’s home, where he was uncooperative during the traffic stop – resisting officers’ request to exit the vehicle.
Rye police arrested a New York City man in December and a Long Island man for car theft in November. The department continues to encourage Rye residents to remember to lock their cars and keep their keys and key fobs safe.
Varela-Pichardo was processed and released on an appearance ticket, requiring him to return to Rye City Court on Feb. 18. He has no previous arrests.
The Bronx local will faces charges for attempted grand larceny – which is considered a felony – as well as charges for interfering with law enforcement and resisting arrest, according to police.
