Stunned residents spotted donkeys and camels parading down the Playland Boardwalk on Oct. 4 as a beautiful day became the backdrop for a scene from a new movie called “Marty Supreme,” starring Timothée Chalamet, Fran Drescher, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin O’Leary, and others.
The film, written and directed by Josh Safdie of Uncut Gems, tells the story of a young ping pong pro in the 1950s, and is loosely based on the true story of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman, according to Variety. The cast and crew last week filmed in New York City, but came to Rye and made quite a splash on the boardwalk. Walkers out for a late-afternoon stroll past Playland Beach took pictures and gawked at the surprising sight of dromedaries draped in fabric.

Dozens of onlookers watched as the cast, which included four camels and two donkeys, took to the beach to record a scene that appeared to capture a photo opportunity set in a desert location. The shot featured a number of extras in ‘50s fashion, and vintage bicycles and baby carriages were also spotted nearby.
As “Marty Supreme” wraps up local filming, Rye can add yet another silver screen notch to its belt. The area has historically been a preferred spot for filming, and Playland itself has been a recognizable location featured in movies like “Big” and “Fatal Attraction.”
