Eager campers had an action-packed week at the Square House as they stepped into the shoes of the people of Rye during the Colonial, Revolutionary Periods, and early 1800s.
Each day brought a different theme – with fun activities such as quill writing, playing Blind Man’s Bluff, making yarn dolls, cooking colonial style mac and cheese, preparing an Apple Pandowdy (John Adams’s favorite dessert), and exploring what different colonial jobs were like in a tavern keeper’s simulation game.
Participants also practiced their acting skills with improv games and prepared a short skit that took place in the Widow Haviland’s Inn in the late 1700s.
The skit, presented to friends and family on the final day, followed Tamar Haviland and her children preparing her inn and tavern for George Washington’s visit.
