The City of Rye is urging residents to take precautions as dangerous heat continues across the region through the Independence Day holiday weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Southern Westchester through 9 p.m. Saturday. Forecasters expect daytime temperatures near or above 100 degrees, with heat index values reaching 105 to 112 degrees. Warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief, increasing the cumulative risk of heat-related illness.
Residents are encouraged to:
- Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
- Spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
- Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and others who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
“With several consecutive days of dangerous heat expected, we encourage everyone to take this forecast seriously,” said City Manager Brian Shea. “Please make a plan to stay cool, remain hydrated, and check on neighbors, friends, and loved ones who may need assistance. We also ask residents celebrating the holiday outdoors to plan ahead by taking frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning and drinking plenty of water.”
The New York State Department of Health maintains a statewide Cooling Center Finder to help residents locate air-conditioned facilities during periods of extreme heat. Residents are encouraged to check the database before traveling, as additional cooling centers may be activated during prolonged heat events.
