The Westchester County Health Department closed Coveleigh Club Beach on Wednesday, citing potential high bacteria levels caused by more than an inch of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
Around 1.08 inches of rainfall showered the Coveleigh Club Beach area, according to the health department. During and after excessive rainfall, drains can back up and cause unsanitary overflow into the beach water.
Coveleigh Club Beach was just one of multiple shut down by the health department Wednesday. The others included Harbor Island, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, and Mamaroneck Beach & Yacht Club in Mamaroneck, as well as Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Club, Greentree Club, and Surf Club in New Rochelle.
All beaches are able to independently reopen Thursday, according to the health department, unless additional significant rainfall is detected.
