Playland Pool and Beach will operate with extended hours this week, the county announced today, in an effort to help residents withstand the incoming heat wave.
The pool and beach at Playland in Rye will be open 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on July 1-2, with the last entry at 7 p.m., according to the Westchester County Parks and Recreation Department. The county has also extended hours at beaches and pools in New Rochelle, White Plains, Yonkers, and Mt. Vernon.
“The safety of our residents is of utmost importance, and we want to provide as many options to stay cool during the upcoming heatwave,” Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said. “We hope residents and visitors will take advantage of our pools and beaches to keep cool, stay active, and enjoy the outdoors safely.”
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch for Rye and the New York City area from July 1-4, predicting temperatures as high as 109 degrees.
The NWS cautions that the extreme heat and humidity “will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.” The agency also predicts there could be “little overnight relief.”
Westchester County Parks Acting Commissioner Peter Tartaglia emphasized residents should take advantage of pools and beaches during the upcoming heat wave.
“Our lifeguards and staff are on duty and ready to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all,” he said. “These facilities remain an important resource for residents during periods of extreme heat.”
Admission and parking fees will still apply during the heat wave, according to the department.
