Playland and Rye Town Park were the latest beaches the Westchester County Health Department closed over contaminated swimming water.
As heavy rains continued to pummel the Sound Shore this week, the Rye beaches were shut down until further notice Friday over elevated bacteria levels in the Long Island Sound. Samples collected exceeded the allowable limits for bacteria in marine water, the county said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Croton Point Park Beach, which lies along the east coast of the Hudson River, was also closed.
The Friday closures come on the heels of a sewage pump station repair in Larchmont Thursday that caused Larchmont Manor Park Beach and Larchmont Shore Club Beach to shutter until further notice.
On Monday, Coveleigh Club in Rye was one of nine local beaches closed due to nearly 2 inches of rainfall over the weekend causing the potential for elevated bacteria levels to enter the Long Island Sound.
Harbor Island, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club in Mamaroneck and Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Club, Greentree Club, and Surf Club in New Rochelle were also closed.
Those beaches were shut down to beachgoers again Wednesday — this time until further notice after 2.4 inches of rainfall hit the Sound Shore over a 24-hour span, likely causing an overflow of the area’s sewer systems.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for southern Westchester, the Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island, and northern Queens until 11 p.m. Friday. A tornado watch was also in effect until 10 p.m. Friday as the region braced for the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby.
Beachgoers are advised to avoid contact with the water in the immediate area until further notice. Visit the county website for the latest updates on beach closures and reopening schedules.
