All three shuttered beaches in Rye were given the green light to reopen Tuesday afternoon, The Record has learned.
Oakland, Playland, and Coveleigh Club beaches were allowed to resume operations — following the latest round of water testing — after being shut down by the Westchester County Health Department indefinitely.
Health officials had closed 17 beaches across Westchester last week as torrential rains dumped several inches of rain on the Sound Shore elevating bacteria counts to concerning levels for swimming.
Debbie Reisner, the Rye Town administrator, told The Record that the town had received an email from the county Health Department around 2 p.m. Tuesday giving them the thumbs up to reopen.
Reisner said town officials were prepared to reopen Oakland Beach almost immediately. “We have lifeguards on duty, so we are opening,” Reisner said.
The park allows swimming until 8 p.m. for those with an open water permit.
Beach Point Club and Orienta Beach Club in Mamaroneck; Hudson Park East Beach, Davenport Club, Greentree Club, and Surf Club in New Rochelle; Larchmont Manor Park and Larchmont Shore Club; and Croton Point Park Beach were also OK’d to reopen, health officials said.
Mamaroneck’s Harbor Island, and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club, and Hudson Park West Beach in New Rochelle were ordered by the Health Department to remain closed.
Residents and visitors are being advised to avoid contact with the water at those beaches until further notice.
Remnants of Tropical Storm Debby caused flash floods and heavy wind gusts across the county last week. Beaches – stretching from New Rochelle to Rye – were intermittently closed as bursts of rain caused overflows of the area’s sewer systems.
By Friday, the Health Department had shuttered 17 beaches until further notice. All of the beaches were along Sound Shore with the exception of Croton Point Park Beach, which lies along the east coast of the Hudson River, and two beaches in Mohegan Lake.
