Rye’s boys lacrosse team lost for the first time this season, falling 12-11 Wednesday against Cold Spring Harbor, the defending Section 8 champion and Class D state semifinalist.
The Seahawks scored first and led 6-2 before the Garnets scored six straight goals in the span of five minutes to pull ahead 8-6. All of Rye’s goals in the game were scored by senior Carson Miller (six) and sophomore Will Niejadlik (five). Senior Henry Shoemaker had four assists, and junior Henry Gilroy added two.
Cold Spring Harbor finally ended its drought 45 seconds before halftime to get back within one.
After halftime, Rye scored just once in a 16-minute span. Meanwhile, the Seahawks scored three in the third quarter to take a 10-9 lead.
The game’s final five minutes were filled with back-and-forth action. With 3:30 left, Rye scored to cut the deficit to 11-10. Cold Spring Harbor responded to restore a two-goal margin. Miller made it 12-11 with 1:30 left, but Rye was unable to score the equalizer in the final 90 seconds.
Rye has a week off before hosting another Long Island lacrosse power, Garden City, at 5 p.m. April 8 in Nugent Stadium. The Trojans beat Cold Spring Harbor 10-4 earlier this season.
