After a long offseason wait, Rye made up for lost time by playing extra hockey in its 2025-26 opener.

The Garnets beat Clarence High School 4-3 in overtime Friday at Playland, with a game-winning goal by senior Trevor Dolan.

Senior Jamie Morris put Rye ahead 3-2 with just over a minute left in regulation, but Clarence pulled its goalie to even the score with five seconds remaining and force overtime. In the extra period, sophomore Will Niejadlik fired a shot, and Dolan knocked in the rebound for the win.

Niejadlik also assisted the Garnets’ first two goals, scored by senior Will Weinman and sophomore Finn Draddy on power plays. Junior goalie Fernando Mosquera stopped 25 of 28 shots.

Rye’s season-opening homestand continues with games at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday against Rivertowns and 7:55 p.m. against Clarkstown, both at Playland.
