Dr. Alvarez Steps Down a Year Early, But Not Before Leaving His Mark

While the community was surprised and saddened to learn last month that Rye City Schools Superintendent Dr. Frank Alvarez, who had one year left on his five-year contract, would not be returning to the position this fall, the School Board was not.

School Board President Katy Glassberg informed the paper that Dr. Alvarez notified the Board last year of his intention not to seek an extension of his contract. The Board then began an extensive search, which resulted in the hiring of Dr. Brian Monahan, on an interim basis, for the 2016-2017 school year.

In parting, Dr. Alvarez gave special thanks for the support of the community, which led to the construction of the new Science Wing, and to the PTO’s, the Friends of Rye City School District, and the Rye Fund for Education. He said he was “proud of the many accomplishments attained over the last four years.”

Speaking on behalf of the entire School Board, Glassberg said, “We’re grateful to Dr. Alvarez for his service to the Rye community, to the District’s students, staff, and families. Several initiatives he began over the last four years, including literacy work, full-day Kindergarten, and STEM offerings, will have lasting impact.” She added, “Frank restructured the District’s emergency management plan and has been a champion of Rye-ACT Coalition. His expertise in school foundations enabled the successful launch of the Rye Fund for Education to provide additional support for academics, arts, and athletics in Rye. We wish him all the best.”

Dr. Brian B. Monahan, who retired as Superintendent of North Rockland School District in 2009, has served as an interim superintendent for three different Westchester schools.
