Dr. Edward Shine passed away on April 21, 2026, from complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was 82.
Dr. Shine came to Rye as superintendent of schools in 1996 and served the Rye community for 16 years.
After retiring for six months, he heard the calling again and became superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Norwich, Conn. Three years later, he completed his 50-year career in education.
He and Madeline became snowbirds, spending time in Connecticut and St. Pete Beach, Fla. His days were now filled with reading, music, lunches with friends, and especially spending time with his six grandchildren.
He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Madeline; three children, Christine Shine, Brendan Shine (Mara), and Marykate Springer (Dan); and six grandchildren, Joaquim and Maddie Rangel, Danny, Christopher, and Andrew Springer, and Easton Shine.
