Ernie Anastos, a longtime New York TV news anchor whose family lived in Rye for years, died Thursday at the age of 82.

Anastos spent four decades working for New York City stations like WABC 7, WCBS 2, and most recently, WNYW FOX 5. While he rose to fame covering major news events in the city, including 9/11 and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Anastos spoke in past interviews about how much he loved returning to his home in Westchester County.

The Anastos family moved from Rye to Armonk, then sold their custom-built home in Armonk in 2019. As a member of Westchester Country Club, Ernie returned to Rye often, even after moving farther north.

Anastos received more than 30 Emmy awards and nominations before retiring from his role as an anchor in 2019. He continued to report on a nationally syndicated show on 77 WABC, and owned several AM and FM radio stations in the Northeast, according to his website.

Former New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio named March 21 “Ernie Anastos Day” in 2017.

His wife, Kelly, said he died of pneumonia Thursday morning at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco.
