Rye police can add another unlikely animal to their list of wildlife sightings this summer.
The Rye PD Instagram account posted a video Friday afternoon of a pod of dolphins swimming through the Long Island Sound, captioned “Not a bad view from today’s marine patrol.”
The post, which clearly shows multiple fins poking out of the water, garnered over 750 likes in under two hours.
“Our Marine Unit crossed paths with a pod of dolphins while patrolling the Long Island Sound. We thought it was worth sharing,” the post said.
Police told The Record the dolphins were spotted by pure chance as officers were patrolling the shore.
Friday’s sighting was the latest in a growing list of animals found in atypical Rye settings. Earlier this month, police joined the Rye Fire Department and Department of Public Works to rescue a fawn that was trapped in storm drain. On Sunday, Rye resident Terry Caridi posted a photo and video of a bobcat walking through foliage near Summit Avenue and North Street. Police told The Record they’re aware of the bobcat and plan to provide an update on its status soon.
