First West Nile Virus Case in Westchester Reported

The Aug. 20 report encourages Westchester residents to take care of standing water on their property.

Westchester health officials reported the first case of West Nile virus in the county last week in a Yonkers man.

The announcement, issued on Aug. 20, encouraged Westchester residents to take care of standing water on their property – including flower pot drip trays, kiddie pools, and other outdoor equipment.

Health Department officials were scheduled to evaluate the Yonkers man’s property where the case was reported, as well as nearby catch basins. No additional information about the man’s condition was released by the Health Department.

“This first case of West Nile Virus should remind all of us to remove standing water around our homes every time after it rains, and use repellents when we spend time outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active,” said county Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler.

The virus typically causes a mild or moderate flu-like illness, with fever, headache, body aches, and joint pain. It can become serious, however, especially for people age 65 and older, and those with underlying medical conditions.

To avoid West Nile, health experts recommend that residents avoid being outdoors at dusk, use insect repellent, run a fan while sitting outside, wear long pants and long sleeves, and check property for standing water.
