Meredith Anne McConnell Elmore suddenly passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Rye on Sunday, July 6. She was 82. Meredith was not ill and did not suffer. She lived life to the fullest until her last moment, recently jumping in the waves and boogie boarding with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Lynne Patrice Elmore Phy (Charlie), and devoted granddaughters, Christiane Catherine, 14, and Kelley Meredith, 13, of Rye. She is also survived by her brother Peter McConnell (Irene), and sisters, Patricia Gavan (Hank) and Dorothy Giersch (Mike), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Meredith is predeceased by her loving daughter, Christiane Marie, and husband, Guy Crane Elmore. She is also predeceased by sisters, Regina David, Alice Geraldine McConnell, and Kathleen DeCew.
Meredith, affectionately known as Merry, was born in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1942, the seventh child of Alice and Frank McConnell. The family moved to Mamaroneck, N.Y., in 1956, where Merry attended Rye Neck High School. She was a graduate of St. Bonaventure University, where she majored in French and foreign languages. For many years, she was a beloved teacher at the French American School in Larchmont, N.Y.
A lifelong devoted Catholic, Merry attended daily Mass at Church of the Resurrection. She always found great comfort in the church and her faith. She brought joy and laughter to all who knew her, as she had a wonderful sense of humor. She will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made in Meredith’s honor to Doctors Without Borders, Catholic Relief Services, or Save the Children.
