Richard W. Owens, a longtime resident of Rye before moving to Vero Beach, Fla., died peacefully on Jan. 13, 2026, at the Sonata Assisted Living Facility in Vero Beach.
Known as Dick, he was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and attended Vander Charles High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, eventually becoming one of the few remaining WWII veterans.
Dick attended NYU on the GI Bill of Rights, earning a bachelor’s degree in business management. He worked many years in the importing business and started his own import company with his wife, June, before retiring to Vero Beach.
Dick was an avid sailor. He and June took many sailing trips on the Long Island Sound.
He is survived by his loving wife, June; June’s son, Wayne (Dorothy) Mahoney; daughters, Linda (Owens) Clark and Madeleine (Roger) Weinreich; son, Richard (Jane) Owens; as well as loving nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
Dick was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn Ford Owens; twin sister, Beverly Owens Moran; older sister, Ellen Owens Fitzgerald; daughters, Constance (Richard) Mavrogeanes, and Evelyn T. Owens.
