Rye High boys’ tennis team kicked off the season and G Day weekend by beating crosstown rival Harrison, 6-1, at home on April 5.
First singles player, sophomore Andrew Emanuel, won 6-3, 6-0.
“I dominated the whole match,” said Emanuel. His father Lloyd is a pro at Sound Shore Tennis Club.
Second singles player and senior Co-Captain Harry Bonay also won easily, 6-2, 6-1.
Bonay likes to rip the ball. “I imposed my power game on him and I played really well,” he said.
Senior Co-Captain Grant DeBease lost at third singles. DeBease struggled in the first set, losing 6-1, but came back to win the second set, 7-5. He then played a very competitive third set, losing the tiebreaker, 8-6. Coach Sue Dickson called it “a very good match.”
First doubles team, juniors James Reid and Kosuke Tremmonte, played an exhausting match, ultimately winning in the third set super tiebreaker. They won the first set 6-2, lost the second 7-6 in a tiebreaker, but won 10-7 in the third set super tiebreaker. Will Friedman and Takumi Matsuo won the second doubles match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
The other Garnets doubles teams won in straight sets. At third doubles, Brandon LaBella and Spencer Smith handily won 6-2, 6-0. And at fourth doubles, Ward Urban and Hunter Baldwin made a great pair, winning 6-3, 6-4.
Coach Dickson said she was pleased with how well the boys played.
On April 19, the tennis team notched another win, topping Blind Brook 6-1.
