They’re only halfway into their second season as a varsity program, but the Rye boys’ varsity squash team has already secured the No. 1 ranking among public high schools.
They vaulted into the elite position, determined by U.S. Squash, after winning the annual Fairwest Tournament held in December at Yale University.
Led by coach Mat Bruno and Rye squash pro Tommy Wolfe, the Garnets compete with public high schools in Bronxville, Darien, New Canaan, and Greenwich, as well as private schools like Rye Country Day, Brunswick School, and Greens Farms Academy. Team practices are held at Apawamis Club, where the squash program is run by Peter Briggs, a former Squash Hall of Famer. Both the varsity and JV teams participate in a conditioning program on off-court days at Rye High School.
“We have great pros at Apawamis to help teach the players,” said Bruno. “Together with our conditioning program, we are looking to have these kids play at a higher level.”
The JV, coached by Greg Janos, has a 5-3 record. With a high level of talent and athleticism, Bruno is confident about the program’s prospects in the years to come. Rising stars include Harrison Collins, Andrew Gladstone, Jon Singer, Mason Baldwin, John Springer, Jack Usry, Jack Donnelly, Andrew Petersen, Jack Maresca, and Nathaniel Smith.
The Garnets are looking forward to continuing their winning streak at the U.S. High School Team Squash Championships at Yale in February. n
