Virginia Grainger of Rye, N.Y. and Vero Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully at home on March 13, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. She was 92.
Born in Mineola, N.Y. on March 29, 1927, she was the daughter of Arthur and Vivian Brewster Rocke, and a direct descendant of Elder William Brewster, the religious leader on The Mayflower.
A lifelong resident of Rye, Ginie, as she was known, attended Rye Country Day School and Connecticut College for Women.
She loved travel, golf, tennis, and bridge, and skied until she was 80. She was a past president of the Addlepate Ski Club and a member of the 18th TWIG and Rye Garden Club. She was a member of Apawamis Club, American Yacht Club, The Moorings Club of Vero Beach, and Ekwanok Country Club.
Mrs. Grainger was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Edmund C. Grainger Jr., who served as Mayor of Rye from 1966 to 1973. She is survived by her four children, Edmund C. (Terry) Grainger III (Sarah), A. Jeffrey Grainger (Moira), Janet Byrne (Tim), and Kathryn Hobbins (John); twelve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
