At the USA Track and Field indoor nationals in Landover, Maryland, the weekend of March 9, two young Rye distance runners brought home medals.
Jonah Gorevic, 9, placed second in the 1500 — missing first place by 5/100 of a second — with a time of 5:04.70. He and the first-place winner beat the previous record for that age/distance. Jonah placed third in the 800 for the Bantam age group (9 and 10) with a time of 2:38.55.
Natalie Weiner, 11, placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:34.42. In the 1500, she came in fourth, with a time of 5:17.13.
Both will compete in the USATF Youth Challenge Series at Icahn Stadium the weekend of April 12. And neither would miss the Rye Derby later this month.
Natalie is a sixth grader at Rye Middle School and Jonah is in fourth grader at F.E. Bellows in Rye Neck.
