Rye seniors will receive battery-operated emergency lanterns, thanks to a grant from Rye Professional Firefighters Local 2029 to the Rye Senior Advocacy Committee.
Many seniors do not have generators or backup power, which can leave them vulnerable, isolated, and at risk, according to the Rye Senior Advocacy Committee. The lanterns will be given to Rye Manor and Vienna Housing residents.
“This initiative will ensure they have a safe and dependable source of light during power outages, peace of mind, and a simple way for first responders and caregivers to check on them and provide aid quickly,” said Michele Thomas, co-chair of the committee. “This is a high-impact solution to increase safety and comfort for some of our most vulnerable neighbors.
The grant was presented to the committee by the Rye Professional Firefighters at a recent meeting at Rye Recreation.
Those who would like to request a lantern can contact Nancy Haneman, co-chair of the Rye Senior Advocacy Committee, while supplies last. Haneman can be reached at nancyhaneman13@gmail.com, and she asks that any requests have “lanterns” in the subject line.
