The late and great artist Christo, and his wife Jeanne-Claude, gave us “Gates,” a site-specific installation of saffron-colored fabric in Central Park in 2005. Last week, it was not a host of golden daffodils we saw outside Milton School, but students raising yellow umbrellas to the sky.
The wave of color was the result of a cooperative project with the Rye Arts Center. Catherine Donnelley, the docent and co-chair of the RAC Famous Artists Project, said, “The art of Jeanne-Claude and Christo is about creating a fleeting moment of community collaboration. It reminds us of art’s ability to feed our souls and build community.”
The children were giddy with excitement as they gathered to collect their umbrellas. Each grade took a turn.
